Sport Visors
Many types of visors are used for sports. Depending on the sport, the visor may be for physical protection or shading from the sun. Here are some of the different visors used by amateur and professional athletes:
- Sun visor – The sun visor is a simple sports visor that consists of the bill of a cap but without the cap. It is a bill attached to a headband with a strap that fits around the head. Some sun visors are made of tinted translucent plastic, while others are cloth. This type of visor is often used for outdoor sports such as tennis and golf. It also commonly worn by sports spectators.
- Hockey helmet – Ice hockey players wear specially-constructed helmets with visors. Because of the aggressive nature of the sport, this visor is purely for the physical protection of the player’s eyes. The visor is removable, but many leagues around the world mandate their use. Some players prefer to wear a half-shield visor covering only the top portion of the face, while others like the protection afforded by a full face shield. Full face shields have the disadvantage of fogging up on the inside.
- Hurling helmet – Many modern players of the ancient Gaelic sport of hurling, popular amongst Irish Australians, wear helmets with visors.
- Lacrosse – Women’s lacrosse in Australia allows for the option of wearing helmets. If a helmet is chosen, some leagues also allow for a sun visor attachment.
